  • Spouses
  • Children under 18 years of age
  • Financially dependent parents (over 65 years old)

This visa is granted only after the family reunification authorization is approved by AIMA (Agency for Integration, Migrations, and Asylum) in Portugal. • The standard processing time ranges from one to three months, but additional time may be required for document verification.

Important Notes

  • This visa is not for those who wish to accompany their family member while also applying for a different visa in their country of origin. Such applicants should instead apply for an Accompanying Family Member Visa.
  • Residence Visa allows applicants to stay in Portugal for over one year. The visa is initially issued for 120 days with two entries, after which the applicant must schedule an appointment with AIMA to apply for a Residence Permit.
    • More information: AIMA Residence Permits
  • The Portuguese Consulate does not manage AIMA appointments. Any issues related to document submission, rescheduling, or eligibility must be addressed directly with AIMA.

Understanding National Visas for Portugal

A National Visa is required for individuals planning to stay in Portugal for more than 90 days. Depending on the duration and purpose of stay, the visa is categorized into:

  • Temporary Stay Visa – Allows a stay of more than 90 days, up to one year, with multiple entries permitted.
  • Residence Visa – Intended for stays of more than one year. Initially, applicants receive a 120-day visa with two entries, after which they must schedule an appointment with AIMA in Portugal to apply for a Residence Permit that grants long-term stay and multiple re-entries.
